We have the trip of a lifetime booked in May/June - one month in Southern Africa including self drive for 14 days in. We have a twin cab 4 x 4 booked. We have never been to Africa before but believe self drive in Namibia is fairly safe. Could anyone give me some advice on the following questions I have:Reading forums it looks like 2 x spare tyres would be a good idea - is that right? Is it a good idea to rent a GPS for the vehicle or sufficient to use maps? I've printed off directions for each leg of the trip from google maps.
Would a gps/map ap via android work? Any advice on picking up a sim card for a cell phone to use whilst there. With regards Etosha we will have already done a week in but is it recommended we still go out on the guided drives at our lodges/accommodation? We'll be self driving through the park anyway - is there any advice on which water holes we should view? I guess it changes day to day. We are staying at Taleni (outside the park), Okaukuejo and Namutoni but only have one night at each. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.
Hi L,We did basically same trip in May 2012 and loved so much we are going back in a few weeks for another 3 week trip.We found self-driving perfectly fine and had no issues safety wise. We had one puncture (in etosha actually) and our x-trail only had one of those temporary spare tyres- not really practical. On our next trip we will have a hi-lux and will be getting an extra spare just in case.Drive carefully on the gravel roads, there won't be many around and it can be easy to pick up speed so slow down, I think the biggest issue safety wise in Namibia is driving accidents. No driving at night and take it easy. Also plan your fuel stops! We got into a bit of trouble driving down to fish river canyon, we saw a town on the map with a petrol station close to fish but when we got to the town it was deserted and no petrol station anymore.
We had to backtrack to Bethanien to get fuel and luckily we had enough to get back there. We took our own Tom Tom GPS from home - purchased the southern africa map and worked fine for us combined with a paper map. You could probably get by with a good paper map but I like having both.
I wouldn't rely at all on maps printed from google maps sorry! Have you booked with an agent? They should also give you reasonable written directions and hopefully a paper map. Can you take your own GPS from home perhaps rather than hiring one (not sure of the cost of hiring vs taking your own and purchasing the map software).
Re using a map app - if this relies on 3G signal then don't count on this. We found with MTN sim card (I think or is it MTC?) that we were constantly in and out of signal and went 2 days down at sossusvlei with no signal at all. We got our simcard in at Jo'Burg when we landed. We did Namibia before heading to and stayed 4 days at, we didn't do the guided drives just went out on our own. Re waterholes to view - some etosha experts will have great advice for you on specific ones. The at night is fantastic.
Do I click the 9th one? Thanks in advance!+1 vote. The parent for Indian Jones is Atarisys1. This has made it that much easier to figure out which ROMs are absolutely necessary and which are minor revisions. Roms mameui64. After playing around with MAME OS X I can tell by the games list that parent ROMs are necessary to play clones.

When driving ask at the camp before you leave, ask other travellers at camp and on your driving and of course if you see a group of vehicles stopped then pull in and see what the fuss is about!Have a wonderful trip, hopefully it won't be a trip of a lifetime but the first of many:). 'Would a gps/map ap via android work?' : Yes, people have recently used Sygic Android app in successfully. Can be used offline as well, if you set it up beforehand.Your route in Namibia is fairly standard and you shouldn't find have too much problem in mobile reception.Tomtom is not compatible with Tracks for Africa ( probably the best maps) whereas Garmin is. So if you are planning to buy/rent one I'd suggest Garmin.I believe the MTN/Vodacom prepaid sim should work in Namibia as well.
If not just buy a prepaid MTC from WDH airport.link:Enjoy. Hi LKK01,Just to let you know. MTN is and MTC is the company in. They are not related so I would suggest that you do obtain a sim card in Namibia.
Roaming is very expensive using a foreign card.I normally use a Garmin GPS with Tracks4Africa maps loaded but I believe the phone GPS is fine. You will not have coverage everywhere but if you have a map, it should be okay as the majority of the roads are numbered. We sell many self drive tours and have yet to have a problem. Obviously off-road and off the track driving is not recommended. Some ideas of waterholes in. Buy the map at the tourist office.
Very good with lots of detail and a good souvenir to take home:Okaukuejo area. Okondeka, Nebrwonii, Gemsbokvlakte, Olifantsbad and Ombika are good(and between Halali and Okaukuejo). Homeb, Salvadora, Rietfontein and Goas.
Goas is double waterhole and normally amazing!Namutoni (and between Namutoni and Halali). Okerfontein loop, Kalkheuwel, Chuddop, Klein Okevi all great.Hope this helps.Danie Steyn. Namibia Tours & Safaris. I have never used a GPS in, though I did have one on my phone. Its all pretty straightforward.
The one place you may need it is/ itself if you are searching for a specific location.Waterholes in vary on a daily basis. The sightings guide in reception are useful to find major animals. Lions are most concentrated round waterholes in dry periods sept/Oct/Nov but disperse and are more difficult to find in April/may/June. Okendeka a good bet, watch where other animals are looking and as has been said, that Nebrowni, Aus, Olifantsbad productive but very popular. Goas is great, take it very slowly as chance of leopards hyena lying in scrub.
